Your next questions, answered

How much will I get at 21 for ₹X a year?

At 8.2%, with deposits at the start of each year for 15 years and no deposits for the last 6: ₹50,000/yr → ₹23.94 lakh; ₹1,00,000/yr → ₹47.88 lakh; ₹1,50,000/yr → ₹71.82 lakh.

Is SSY better than PPF?

SSY pays 8.2% against PPF’s 7.1%; both are tax-free. On ₹1.5 lakh a year for 15 years, SSY gives about ₹44.76 lakh and PPF about ₹40.68 lakh. SSY is only for a girl below 10 and matures at 21, with partial withdrawal for education allowed after she turns 18.

Does it beat inflation?

At 6% inflation, 8.2% tax-free is a real return of about 2.08% a year.

Diving Finance view: expert take by Ashutosh Joshi

  • For a daughter’s education goal, SSY is a strong debt base. Pair it with an equity SIP (plan for 10–12%) for growth.
  • Like PPF, deposit early in the year or in instalments before the 5th as money comes in.

This is general guidance, not personal advice. Check your own goals, tax slab and risk appetite.

Assumptions in the comparisons: income-tax slabs of 30% and 20% plus 4% cess (31.2% and 20.8%), an illustrative bank FD at 7%, long-run inflation of 6% and equity SIP returns of 10–12%, as used by our author. These are planning assumptions, not forecasts.

Worked example

Deposit ₹1.5 lakh at the start of every year for 15 years. If the rate stayed at 8.2% (compounded yearly), the balance would be about ₹44.76 lakh after 15 years and about ₹71.82 lakh at maturity in year 21. You put in ₹22.5 lakh. The rate is reset every quarter, so treat this as an estimate.
